Linguistics is the scientific study of human language. While some linguists may study particular languages, linguists aim to understand the nature of language in general.
Linguistics is a descriptive field, meaning the aim is to describe language and all its wonderful, varied features. Linguistics is NOT prescriptive, meaning it does not endorse a “proper” way to speak a language. Linguists believe that all languages, dialects and forms of human communication are equal.
